What is a Licensed Veterinary Technician?

A licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is a person who has graduated from a veterinary technology program accredited or approved by the Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) of the American Veterinary Medical Association, or other accrediting agency approved by the Board, or a person who has received equivalent training as set forth in the rules of the Board.

What responsibilities do veterinary technicians have?

  • Obtaining and recording patient case histories
  • Collecting specimens and performing lab procedures, including interpreting urine results, fecal samples, blood samples & taking blood, etc.
  • Preparing animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery
  • Taking radiographs of animals
  • Assisting in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures
